Mercedes-Benz G-Class EV to offer silicon battery technology

Mercedes-Benz‘s upcoming all-electric G-Class will use new, energy-dense electric vehicle battery technology that should help keep the off-roader’s weight down. The German automaker has confirmed the electric G-Class will be optionally available with silicon-based electric vehicle (EV) battery technology manufactured by US startup Sila Nanotechnologies from 2025. The company’s high-silicon anode material is claimed to have a 20 to 40 per cent increase in energy density compared to commercially available battery cells with a comparable format, with a volumetric energy density of more than 800Wh/L. For context, the current Chinese-built Tesla Model 3 with its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack has a volumetric energy density of 359Wh/L. Markus Schäfer (left) & Sila co-founder and...

2023 BMW XM spied

BMW’s M division is getting ready to introduce its first bespoke SUV, the XM, and one has been spied in transit. In photos shared on Wilco Blok’s Instagram account and Autospy, an XM can be seen without the traditional prototype camouflage. While there are still shrouds over parts of the front end, the tail lights, wheels and dashboard, much of the car is uncovered. We can see the front end styling of the Concept XM has made the transition to production largely unscathed, with an angular, raised bonnet with a prominent central crease inside which sits the roundel logo. The double-kidney grille appears to be bordered with gold trim, with an unusual gold-finish trim piece running parallel to the beltline. The Concept XM also featured a thick side trim piece, however this was finished in bl...

Ford Thunderbird could be revived as coupe grand tourer – report

The Ford Thunderbird could fly again. Sources familiar with the matter told Ford Authority the famous nameplate is being considered for a comeback. This time around, it would reportedly be an indirect rival to the Chevrolet Corvette, albeit without a mid-engine layout. With production of the GT ending, the Thunderbird would in theory serve as a new halo model for the brand. 2002 Thunderbird Ford already filed a trademark for the Thunderbird name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office last year, and the company has said it’s open to reviving more famous nameplates from its past. It’s already done so over the past couple of years, dusting off the Puma, Bronco and Maverick nameplates. It’s unclear what would power a revived Thunderbird. While the Corvette still offers a good old-...

Tesla Cybertruck orders closed outside North America

Unless you live in the USA, Canada or Mexico, you can no longer order a Tesla Cybertruck. That includes Australia, where the option to put a refundable $150 deposit down on the electric ute has been removed. A visit to Tesla’s Australian website instead reveals a “Get Updates” button in its place. “We have more orders of the first Cybertrucks than we could possibly fulfil for three years after the start of production,” CEO Elon Musk said last week at the Financial Times Future of the Car 2022 conference. The Cybertruck has been delayed repeatedly, if not to the same extent as the Semi and Roadster. The most recent word from the company is the Cybertruck will enter production in 2023 at the company’s new plant in Austin, Texas. “We will not be introducing new vehicle models this year. It ...

Volkswagen and Walkinshaw in talks over new Amarok flagship

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia will again turn to local engineering partner, Walkinshaw Group, to develop more capable and tougher-looking derivatives of its still-unrevealed next-generation Amarok dual-cab ute. With global development partner Ford (the new Amarok is based on the new Ranger) topping off its range with the global Ranger Raptor, it’s imperative that Volkswagen Australia has a similar halo Amarok offering to lure adventure seekers. Since Australia will be the world’s biggest market for the new Amarok, any more hardcore or sporty vehicle project is arguably best done in this country – in such a way, from VW’s perspective, as to tempt people away from the well-resourced aftermarket. It also helps the project that Volkswagen will not have access to a version of the...
