Best Car of the Year in the World 2022: these are the definitive candidates who aspire to the crown

After unveiling the provisionals in August, we already know the definitive candidates that will measure me short to become the Best Car of the Year in the World 2022 and succeed the Volkswagen ID.4 on the throne, as the electric SUV now carries the title.

In total they are 29 cars that aspire to this award, which is now in its eighteenth edition. This list will be reduced to 10 finalists on February 8, while on March 17 there will only be three final finalists. The winner will be announced on April 13 at the New York Show 2022.

It must be remembered that all the cars that enter this definitive list must be for sale in at least two of the main markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America and the US) between January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022.

In addition, it is required that its production be of at least 10,000 units per year and that its price is below the luxury segment in any of these markets.

The 39 contenders for Best Car of the Year in the World 2022

As in previous editions, at the absolute category, in which the World Car of the Year, others are added: Urban Car, Performance Car Y Luxury Car. However, for the first time a fourth category is also included, only aimed at zero emissions: Electric Vehicle of the Year.

Although in the contenders for the absolute title we find also electric models, such as the Audi Q4 e-tron or the Ford Mach-E as well as some that have plug-in hybrid variants such as the Citroën C5 X, the CUPRA Formentor or the Peugeot 308, or that are exclusively hybrids, such as the Toyota Corolla Cross and Yaris Cross.

Be that as it may, at the moment there is considerably more variety than for example in the Car of the Year in Europe 2022, whose seven ultimate aspirants are all but one pure electric. We’ll see where the thing is when the list is reduced to 10.

It is also true that last year, the winner was a zero emissions, although with the inclusion of an exclusive category for these mechanics, perhaps this year it will not be an electric that takes the crown.

Two brands shine especially with up to three candidates for the crown: Hyundai and Toyota. For their part, Audi, Chevrolet, Kia, Subaru and Volkswagen are competing for the title with two candidates each.
